Other Ecological Societies

Many societies exist around the world that focus on the science and practice of ecology. This list gives the contact details of a few of them. If any of this information is out of date, or incomplete, please forward updates and corrections to Richard English. National ecological societies are listed under their own country whilst those with an international base (i.e. the European Ecological Federation) can be found under 'International'.

CHILE
Sociedad de Ecologia de Chile
(Ecological Society Of Chile)

Secretary

The Ecological Society of Chile (Sociedad de Ecología de Chile - SOCECOL) started in July 1978 as the Ecology Section of the Biological Society of Chile, and became formally founded in July 1992. The Society, however, became officially and legally constituted in October 1994 as the outcome of a long process of maturation of the discipline in Chile.

Goals
The main goal of SOCECOL is to promote and stimulate experimental and theoretical investigations leading to a greater development, progress and dissemination of ecological sciences in our country. The Society represents the corporate voice of Chilean ecologists. The increasing public concern about environmental problems and ecological topics in Chile pose new challenges for SOCECOL.

An important aim of the Society is to encourage communication among ecologists, mainly through the organization of an Annual Meeting that brings together scholars from different disciplines around the common theme of ecology.

The Ecological Society of Germany, Austria and Switzerland is a non-governmental and non-commercial charitable organisation founded in 1970 in Giessen, Germany. Founding members of the society included the internationally known ecologists H. Ellenberg (Göttingen), W. Haber (München), L. Steubing (Giessen) and H. Walter (Hohenheim). With more than 1,700 members, including about 150 with a permanent residence outside of Germany, Austria or Switzerland (as of May 2001), the GfOe is now one of the largest ecological societies within the German-speaking European countries. The Society pursues exclusively and directly the charitable aim of promoting collaborative work in all ecological disciplines and represents ecological interests for the public. The main goals of the GfOe are:

1. research on the environment and the environmental interrelationships of organisms, including humanity,
2. support of ecological education in schools and tertiary institutions,
3. supporting the interests of ecology and its representation to the public and authorities, as well as the promotion of the practical application of ecological knowledge and methods, with the aim of promotiing environmentally friendly attitudes and environmentally appropriate planning.

The GfOe is a member of the European Ecological Federation (EEF) and INTECOL. The Society is anxious to increase mutually beneficial contacts with other European ecological societies.
