Ecology - a science that matters

Instead of text book definitions this poster shows students what ecology is by showing what ecologists do. Put together by Dr Margaret Palmer on behalf of the Society's Education, Training and Careers Committee, the poster is packed full of exciting information and pictures on topics like climate change, GM crops and food chains. The hard copy of the poster is A1 size in full colour. Single copies of the poster booklet can be obtained free of charge on receipt of a self-addressed A4 envelope with stamps to the value of 41p from the BES office.

The online version of the poster has lots of exciting extras.

Can microbes be used to improve sports turf?Do dormice have to pay the price of faster travel to Paris? What is the shocking truth about surveying fish populations? How can we predict the ecological effects of pollution and climate change? How can we conserve a habitat and its biodiversity? Why is it worth studying the same road verge for many years? How will global warming affect rare plants? What can the Arctic tundra tell us about acid rain?Which is the best way to control pests?Do GM crops damage the environment? Is any harm done by crayfish farming? There is only one world yet we have damaged much of its fragile surface. Ecologists have the skills needed to restore what has been destroyed and to prevent more destruction. This involves understanding how cumminities of plants and animals work and how they can be helped to restore themselves.
