Production of high quality sports turf

Sports turf is thirsty.. keep it green!

Sports turf is thirsty. To keep it green, liberal applications of water, fertiliser and pesticides may be needed. Current research is aimed at reducing these demands.

Ecologists can help to produce better quality sports turf. The resistance of grasses to drought, diseases, pests and wear can be improved by increasing the effectiveness of the beneficial fungi and bacteria in turf soil.

Ecological investigations are currently being carried out on turf from golf courses and Premier League football pitches in the UK. The aim of this work is to reduce the demand for pesticides, fertiliser and water by finding new methods of growing desirable grasses organically.
