General Notes

The Society funds grants with the aim of promoting ecological research and training as widely as possible. For this reason, the individual awards are generally of relatively small value, although many awards are made. In recent years over £400,000 per annum has been awarded through the Society's grants. Committees and specialist panles created by the Society are responsible for awarding grants. In the first instance, queries should be directed to the staff at the Society's office.

Details of each grant state whether application is by letter, downloadable or online form.  The format of the original form must be followed faithfully, clear reference must be made to each section and the total length must not exceed the number of pages in the original form. Forms exceeding the page length may be rejected. The amount of space given to each section on an application form reflects the amount of information that is required and applicants are requested not to alter the size of sections and not to use smaller than recommended font size. Electronic versions of the application forms, in Word 97 for PC format, are available with information about each grant on this site. Paper copies of the forms can be obtained from the BES Office but electronic applications are prefered.

Where referees' statements are required ( Small Ecological and Undergraduate Ecological Project Support Grants and the Early Career Project Grants) the applications will not be considered by the Society if the referees' statements are not received by the application deadline. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that referee statements and other supporting literature asked for is sent to the BES by the deadline.

Acknowledgement of receipt of grant applications will be made electronically if requested and if an email address is provided.

This information on BES grants replaces the 'Grants, Awards & Prizes' leaflet issued in May 2005. Grants have been modified so you are advised to look through the information carefully.

Should it be that your particular ecologically based need is not covered by any of the existing grant schemes, please see our Ecological Opportunities Fund. It will be worthwhile contacting the Grants Officer informally well in advance for advice and information prior to making an application.

Applications for awards are welcomed from all ecologists. Awards are not restricted to those resident in the British Isles, and any restrictions that do apply are given in the details of the awards. However, applicants should note that the Society does NOT fund:

  • work which has already taken place
  • construction of wildlife areas.
  • further degree courses

Applicants are normally informed of the outcome of their application within six weeks of the closing date, unless stated otherwise.

Repeat applications, for essentially the same project will be rejected.

It is not possible to publish full details of several grants, including 'Student support for attendance at BES meetings' ' because details are dependent on particular conferences. The best way to keep up to date on grant information is through the Society's newsletter, the Bulletin, which is available to BES members. An annual list of awardees will be made available on the BES grants webpage.

A condition of many of the grants is the submission of a report. These reports are used to judge the efficacy of grant schemes as well as being a record of the project work. All reports should be submitted in an electronic format unless stated otherwise in the specific grant guidelines. Soem awards have report templates which can be downloaded from the report section of our website.
