Analysis of trophic interactions between omnivorous ciliates and heterotrophic flagellates from soils and freshwaters of the Maritime Antarctic

Dr Tobias Garstecki

Excerpt

Heterotrophic protists form a relatively species-rich faunal component in soils and freshwaters of the maritime Antarctic, but little is known about the ways they interact within the microbial food web of these habitats. We carried out an experimental study using Antarctic soil ciliates and heterotrophic flagellates in order to analyse (1) the significance of the trophic link between these groups, and (2) the degree of ciliate selectivity when feeding on heterotrophic flagellates.
