Behaviour of larval coral reef fishes in noisy environments
Stephen D. Simpson
Abstract
Our expedition to Lizard Island Research Station covered two new moon periods in the austral summer, the time that young coral reef fish recruits arrive on reefs on the Great Barrier Reef, and was followed with time in Auckland and Darwin working up the results. I was one of a team of researchers that gathered from around the world to apply a variety of approaches to look at the sensory capabilities of recruits as they return to reefs from their larval developmental period at sea. Our team comprised of Mark Meekan (Australian Institute of Marine Science), Andrew Jeffs (NIWA Ltd, New Zealand), John Montgomery (University of Auckland), myself, two assistants (Marten Wolter and Caroline Stewart) and an American student (Nick Larsen). We joined a second team with similar interests led by Jeff Leis from the Australian Museum and Dennis Higgs from Windsor University, Canada.
