Educational Innovation and Research Grants

The aim of the Society in offering Education Innovation Grants is to encourage teachers and others involved in formal education to develop new approaches in communicating ecology which promote good practice and make ecology both exciting and intellectually stimulating. This can be achieved in several alternative ways:

  • development of innovative ecological curriculum material by classroom teachers;
  • innovative development of nature reserves and public parks as an educational resource (projects which simply comprise the construction of wildlife areas will not be considered);
  • innovative ways of involving pupils in ecological research projects;
  • certain types of school-based expeditions involving pupils that provide innovative ways of providing ecological field experience for young people;
  • innovative ways of providing ecological INSET for teachers and other communicators.

Applications need to be tightly focused and should include:

  • an outline of what the project is about including rationale and methods to be used;
  • why the project is innovative - what makes it a case of breaking new ground?
  • why the project is educational. Target groups to be clearly identified.
  • why is the project ecological. In what way does the project promote good practice in ecological education?

It would be helpful to identify a specific aspect of the project or item of equipment for BES sponsorship and full details of how the funding would be spent should be given. The application needs details of specific targets, methods for achieving them and a timetable.

It will often be appropriate for a member of ETCC, or another BES member nominated by ETCC, to visit the applicant to check the arrangements and to offer advice.
