Group Interests and Activities

EGG is an informal group of scientists; academics, researchers and graduate students, whose interests include ecological genetics, populations genetics & population biology, biosystematics, conservation, molecular ecology and phylogeography. The group has a three-day meeting at Easter each year (venue varies) including an excursion to a field site of interest, usually preceded by an optional workshop. Talks are welcomed from students giving their first presentation, to senior academics presenting completed work.

Next Meeting EGG 2008

The 52nd meeting of the EGG will take place on the 1st - 3rd April 2008 at the University of Sheffield.

The invited speaker in 2008 is Professor Loren Reiseberg from the USA, who has received awards for his pioneering research into speciation and use of a wide range of theoretical and experimental approaches from classical cross-breeding to genomic mapping.

As at all EGG meetings, there will be an afternoon field visit to a local site of ecological and conservation interest.  In 2008 this will be to Cressbrookdale, part of the Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve, to see the early flowering species and talk about management of the site.

Talks, discussion topics and posters are welcomed from students giving their first presentation, to senior academics presenting completed work.  Offers of papers and poster presentations are welcome and should be sent to Raj Whitlock at:- r.whitlock@sheffield.ac.uk

The History of EGG

The Ecological Genetics Group was born in 1956, following correspondence between J.W.Gregor (Director of the Scottish Plant Breeding Station, Pentlandfield) and K.Jones (Head of Cytology at the then Welsh Plant Breeding Station, Aberystwyth). The first of these letters is dated 13th August 1956. Since then the group has held annual meetings at Easter, futher details are available via the following link...

Guidance for Local Organiser

It is not an onerous task organising an EGG meeting so why not consider being a host in the future? The local organiser is responsible for liaising with the group secretary and organising the annual meeting.
