Aims

The Mires Research Group fosters the study of, and interest in, wetland ecosystems. The main objectives are:

  1. To share information and focus attention on wetland research through science-based workshops/meetings/field trips and the web page and email list.
  2. To facilitate contact between conservation managers and scientists.

Background to the Group

The overall interests and activities of the group are essentially determined by its membership. They are broad, and include:

  • formation and development of wetlands
  • description of the wetland biota and environments
  • analysis of their inter-relationships
  • conservation and management of wetlands
  • use of wetlands in palaeoecological studies

The MRG acts as an interface for discussion between members holding these interests.

  • We have a membership of about 130 individuals from several different countries with a wide range of interests and expertise.
  • We chair a session at the Winter Meeting of the BES at which papers of wetland interest can be offered.
  • We organise field meetings - ideally associated with mini-conferences or workshops. Occasionally, the material gathered is published in an appropriate journal.
  • We periodically mounts symposia and workshops concerned with particular issues.
  • We welcome new members and recognise that the understanding of wetlands can only advance effectively using a multi-disciplinary approach, and thus would encourage palaeontologists, people who work on freshwater wetlands other than mires, molecular ecologists, microbial ecologists and peat biochemist to join us.

To become a member of the MRG just e-mail Deborah Pearce and join the "bes-mire" mail-base (see below). This is the easiest way for the MRG secretary to keep you informed.

Email discussion and information group

The Mires Research Group runs an email discussion list, called "bes-mire", that is open to all researchers interested in mire and peatland systems. Messages may include research information, discussion and requests, news of future meetings and job advertisements. To join or to search the archives, go to the web-site http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/bes-mire.html. You will be sent instructions on how to use the list automatically. If you have any questions or problems, send an email to the list owner at bes-mire-request@jiscmail.ac.uk.
