BES Student Session
Glasgow University
9 September, 2007

The day will begin with a plenary by the BES President Professor Sir John Lawton, followed by talks and posters presented by student delegates.  The formal programme will conclude with a CV Clinic and forum entitled ‘Your Future in Ecology’ before joining the main meeting's Welcome Reception at the Kelvingrove Gallery.

Students are invited to submit abstracts for posters and talks as an email attachment to the session coordinator Sarah Dalrymple.  Abstracts must be no more than 50 words long (longer abstracts will be rejected).  Please include the names and affiliations of you and your co-authors, and your year of study.  There are only ten time slots for talks and fifteen poster spaces.  Presentations will be selected to reflect a broad range of subjects within ecology.  The deadline for submission of abstracts is Friday 20th July 2007.  You will be contacted by the session coordinator to confirm that you have been successful.

If you are interested in receiving feedback on your CV from established ecologists send it as an attachment to Sarah Dalrymple.  State which sector you are interested in working in (e.g. research, NGOs, consultancy etc.) and I will try and match you to a relevant person on the panel.  The panel, so far, includes Dr John Hopkins (Terrestrial Ecosystems Specialist, Natural England), Dr Alan Crowden (Cambridge University Press and BES Bulletin Editor) and Professor Sue Hartley (BES Vice-President and University of Sussex), other reviewers to be confirmed.  You will receive written feedback on the day and all delegates will be able to participate in the CV and Careers Clinic.  Unfortunately, only 20 CVs can be accepted, so I will operate on a first come, first served basis. CVs must be submitted by Friday 20th July and will then be sent to a relevant member of a review panel.

The final event is an open forum on ‘Your Future in Ecology’.  Topics might include anything from careers queries to asking what the next big development is likely to be in ecological research.  The panel includes Katrina Gray (careers specialist in research, University of Glasgow), Ben Kotovic (UK Grad Programme) and members of the BES Council.

The Annual Meeting itself promises to be as valuable as ever with workshops on writing grant proposals, getting your work published and learning analytical techniques adding to scientific programme covering all aspects of ecology.  As student attendance has again been subsidised by 50% and the preceding Student Session only costs £10, we hope that we've made it as affordable as possible for BES student members to attend a high quality scientific conference and participate in the Society's activities.

Bookings for the Student Session and Annual Meeting must be made by Thursday 2nd August.
