Student Essay CompetitionThe Society is launching a new competition open only to undergraduate and graduate students. Students represent the future of the subject (and the BES), so the topic for this first competition is: "The Future of Ecology" You can interpret this topic in any way you like; you might consider ecology to be on the verge of a golden age, with increased public awareness of global change, and politicians (in the UK at least) scrambling over each other to demonstrate their green credentials. Perhaps you suspect the subject is on a downward spiral with few career prospects and little financial reward? Or you might choose to focus on a specific topic and argue that your own research area is the most important development since Ernst Haeckel coined the term ‘oecologie’ in 1866; the choice is yours. We seek thoughtful and imaginative work that can hold the interest of Bulletin readers. Essays should be no more than 1200 words and the deadline for submission is 15th July. Submit your essay to the Bulletin editor Alan Crowden Essays will be judged by a panel composed of experienced editors and authors. The winner will be announced at the Annual meeting in Glasgow, with the winner receiving a cheque for £250 and a certificate. Book prizes will be offered to runners up.
