What we publish

Journal of Applied Ecology is an international journal that publishes high-impact ecological research of direct relevance to environmental management.

Scope

The journal publishes novel papers that apply ecological concepts, theories, models and methods to the management of biological resources in their widest sense. The editors encourage contributions that use applied ecological problems to test and develop basic ecological theory, although there must be clear potential for improving current management. Papers should have an explicitly ecological focus, but can relate to any of the major themes in applied ecology, including:
• Application and development of improved strategies for the conservation of wildlife.
• Assessing and mitigating the ecological impacts of global change and environmental pollution
• Wildlife and habitat management
• Sustainable management of natural resources (including aquatic resources)
• Ecology of ecosystem restoration and species reintroductions
• Ecological approaches to the management of pests, weeds and diseases
Articles that interact with related fields are welcomed providing that their relevance to applied ecology is clear.

Types of papers

Since the scope of the Journal is large, and submission rates high, contributions should be of the highest quality. ‘Standard papers’ should convey important and innovative recommendations for environmental management and policy, and should make a major contribution of broad interest to an international readership in applied ecology. We encourage 'Forum' articles that stimulate dialogue between ecologists and managers, and we seek 'Reviews' or 'Mini-reviews' that offer timely synthesis. In addition, we publish methodological developments or evaluations as 'Methodological Insights'. Where there is clear justification, the Journal can implement a fast-track procedure for outstanding submissions of all types for publication under the heading 'Priority Contributions'.

Standard papers

The majority of papers submitted to the Journal fall into this category. They report applied ecological science that does not fall into one of the specific categories detailed below.

Methodological insights

These papers either illustrate new developments in applied ecology, or provide a forum for the discussion, review, revision and application of established methods. The scope embraces all methodological stages from the design of investigations and the collection of data to analysis, synthesis and application. Papers in this section are often shorter than standard contributions and can either follow the same structure or have a more flexible format.

Reviews and mini-reviews

The editors are actively seeking reviews and mini-reviews on topical themes in all the major areas of applied ecology. Reviews can be slightly longer than standard papers.

Forum articles

Forum articles stimulate debate in the ecological community. They should be short contributions offering conceptual advance, opinion, response to previous articles, or identifying gaps in knowledge. We welcome items that develop dialogue between ecologists and environmental managers. The Journal encourages forum contributions organized around a cogent theme.
