Content
Journal of Ecology is published six times a year and, in addition to Standard papers, it accepts Essay Reviews (8-10pp reviews intended to promote discussion of a topical area, rather than exhaustive surveys of the literature) and Forum articles (opinions or responses to material published in the Journal or other short articles without data). Our aim is that the content of the Journal will reflect the changing emphasis in our subject area and we therefore urge authors to consider submitting their best and most current work to us. We are particularly interested in receiving proposals for Essay Reviews and Forum articles, but suggest that intending authors of such contributions should send an outline of the content to the Executive Editor before preparing a detailed draft.
Please note that Journal of Ecology no longer publishes Appendices in the printed version. Where essential, raw data and other additional material associated with papers published in the Journal, which have previously formed the Journal of Ecology Archive on the BES web site, may be made available to subscribers to the electronic version of the journal via a direct link from the paper. Recent entries can be accessed directly from the article on Synergy or using the URL given in the printed version: to access earlier entries click here. In order to promote the advancement of science through the process of documenting and making available the research information and supporting data behind published studies, the editors of this journal strongly encourage authors to make arrangements for archiving their underlying data .
Most issues also carry a description of at least one species in our ongoing account of the Biological Flora of the British Isles. Over two hundred accounts have already been published and recent accounts cover both common (e.g. Persicaria amphibia, Festuca arundinacea, Molinia caerulea) and endangered (e.g. Coincya wrightii) species. Accounts from 1998 onwards are available electronically and can be accessed, free of charge, from the index page or by registering with Synergy. Offers of new accounts are always welcome and should be sent to Dr Anthony J Davy, School of Biological Sciences, University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ.
Scope
Journal of Ecology publishes original research papers on all aspects of the ecology of plants (including algae), in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. We are happy to consider studies of plant communities, populations or individual species, and studies of the interactions between plants and organisms such as animals, fungi or bacteria, providing that the focus is towards the ecology of the plants. Our authors, Editors and readers come from across the world and the Journal brings important work, using either traditional or more modern (e.g. molecular) ecological techniques to a very wide audience. We publish papers that will have a broad interest, and submission of reports that break new ground or advance our understanding of ecological principles is particularly welcomed. Both experimental and theoretical papers are accepted, as are descriptive or historical accounts that offer insights into issues of general interest to ecologists, but those concerned solely with cultivated plants and agricultural ecosystems are not.
A number of recent key papers which we hope will be of general interest are available to download free of charge. You can also view a list of papers currently 'in press' and browse through Tables of Contents from 1997 onwards. Please register with Synergy if you wish to download a sample copy free of charge.
Submission
The Journal continues to be oversubscribed and we have to be selective in what we publish. Increased submission rates means that, despite a reduction in average length, enabling us to publish more papers within our page allocation (1360pp per year from 2007), the acceptance rate remains around 25%. Rejection decisions are not taken lightly, but our aim is to facilitate a rapid turnaround of those papers that are likely to be, in the Editors' opinion, of greatest interest to an international ecological audience.
Journal of Ecology has a fully web-based system for submission and review of manuscripts. The submission site for all British Ecological Society Journals is at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/besjournals. To go direct to the Journal of Ecology section of the site, click here. When preparing a manuscript for submission, please help us by following the most recent version of the Instructions to Authors .
The Editors are assisted by an international panel of around thirty Associate Editors, selected to provide expertise covering both the subject areas and the geographical range of submissions. We rely on Associate Editors to suggest appropriate referees for papers in their area of interest, and to evaluate the reviewers' reports in a recommendation to the Executive Editor. The decision to accept, reject or invite revision of a paper, however, rests with the Editors, whose decision is final. All correspondence after submission should be routed via the Managing Editor
