Hope it will encompass the whole spectrum of those involved, being both representative & diverse. One area that was highlighted & has an obvious solution is to have the subject benchmarked in universities. Maybe not as ‘Taxonomy & Systematics’ – but recognition & identification skills have been lost & there are very few higher education establishments that provide adequate cover and practice of this skill set. Dont expect to develop a new generation of alpha taxonomists, but do expect to have sufficient students moving into the workplace with good species level ID skills.
A plea that NERC do not just fund studentships on the molecular side – barcoding is not the solution – need to blend the two areas.
