New Opportunity for a Development Officer at the BES

The BES has an exciting opportunity for a part-time (0.5 FTE, 17.5 hours per week) Development Officer to support the activities and growth of the Natural Capital Initiative (NCI), in which the BES is a partner. The post is offered as a fixed-term contract until April 2016.

Set up in 2008, the Natural Capital Initiative supports the development of UK science, policy and practice relevant to natural capital valuation and the consideration of ecosystems in decision making and for planning.

The NCI’s mission is to support decision-making that results in the sustainable management of our natural capital based on sound science. We aim to do this by:

Initiating and facilitating dialogue between people from academia, policy, business and civil society who make or influence decisions to find shared solutions and approaches; and

Communicating independent, authoritative synthesis and evaluation of the scientific evidence base.

The Development Officer will play an instrumental role in the delivery of a two day conference, ‘Valuing our Life Support Systems 2014’, taking place at the British Library in London on 6-7 November, and in the development of follow-on and other activities. The post-holder will be primarily responsible for seeking sponsors for the Initiative in general and the meeting in particular and for the delivery of a communications plan to ensure the NCI’s activities attract supporters from across sectors. The post holder will develop and support further activities in 2015 and beyond, such as round-table discussions and workshops.

The successful candidate will have a good first degree, or equivalent (minimum 2.1), preferably in ecology, environmental science or a related subject. They will have previous experience of successful fundraising; a proven record of growing collaborative initiatives and networks; experience of working with and co-ordinating successful partners in a project and excellent communication skills.

In return the BES offers benefits including 20 days holiday per annum (pro rata), plus BES office closure days and bank holidays, season ticket loan, childcare voucher scheme and a contributory pension.
