What careers opportunities are open to ecologists, which possible pathways to achieving career goals?

This event is developed by the British Ecological Society’s Undergraduate Fellowship, a group of current undergraduates, recent graduates, Masters students and PhD students. the schedule is based very much on our own own experiences and questions.

12th March 2012.  11.30am -17.30pm with lunch provided

£10 deposit required by all delegates which is fully refunded for all BES members on attendance.

Current agenda for the day

11.30 am - Registration and tea/coffee

12.00 pm – Plenary Speaker:  Hazel Norman.  Executive Director, British Ecological Society

12.20 -1.20pm - Career Pathway Talks and Q&A Session :

  • Academic, teaching and research -  Professor John Altringham ( University of Leeds)
  • International conservation - Mark Stanley-Price (Wildlife Conservation Research Unit,
    University of Oxford)
  • NGO & Scientific Capacity (UK and international) - Rosie Trevelyan (Tropical Biology Association)

1.20pm-2.20pm- Lunch and supported networking session:

2.20 - 3.20- Career Pathway talks : 

  • Consultancy - Ben Kimpton ( The Ecology Consultancy)
  • Policy – Ceri Margerison (British Ecological Society) with Laura Bellingan (Society of Biology)
  • Communication and Education -John Tweddle (Natural History Museum)

3.20 – 4.00pm : Panel discussion:  please note if you have any particular questions you wish to raise these can be submitted to a member of the staff throughout the day.

4.00pm-5.00pm  Workshops:

  • The next step:  This session will be led by members of the undergraduate fellowship scheme and will include an introduction to the scheme and specific case studies of the group in making their own next steps.  This session is more suitable for second/final year undergraduates.
    • Laura Boggeln             Gaining employment with a consultancy after graduation
    • Olivia Richardson        Progressing to a masters
    • Thea Powell                Progressing to a PhD
  • Effective networking:  This session will include the days speakers  as well as BES members who can help with networking skills, using the correct body language when meeting people, and how to get work experience.   This session is suitable for all
  • CV Workshop : Sarah Blackford (a qualified careers advisor and MBTI practitioner with the Society for Experimental Biology will lead this session). FOUR Experienced ecologists from education/industry based backgrounds will be able review and answer questions related to your CV. The workshop will be a drop in session and is suitable for final year undergraduates, graduates and masters students. If you would like to take part in this opportunity, please bring a complete, good quality, up to date CV on the day for a panel member to discuss any suggestions and ideas with you.
