Dear Amos,

Thank you for your post.

You may be glad to hear that the BES does provide £10,000 annually to the Tropical Biology Association to subsidize its Student Tropical Field Courses. Though the funding subsidizes students from Europe to attend, as the funds raised are used to also subsidize free places for African Students we are in effect part subsidizing everyone who takes part in the scheme. Courses have been run in Madagascar, Kenya and Tanzania. Please do visit their website for more details on the scheme and how to take part if you are a student.

http://www.tropical-biology.org/training/courses/current_courses.htm

The BES does find that these are very professionally run and important courses and are happy to be associated with a society that can deliver such quality courses.

In addition please do note that the BES has funded Capacity Building within the Ecological Communities in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia by funding the establishment and first three year running costs for the East African Ecological Society. Finally the BES does support Ecologists in African through its Overseas Bursary and Fellowship Schemes.

Please visit the following pages for more details.

Please do feel free to post in response or contact the BES Grants Officer directly if you would like to go into any of the above in any more details.

Yours sincerely,
