BES Grants and Awards
The Society provides grants to promote excellent ecological research, education, training and communication as widely as possible. In recent years, over £400,000 per annum has been awarded through the various Society grants.
Note: Funding is not available for projects or activities which have already taken place or are planned to commence before the grant deadline.
Education Grants
The BES assists teachers to develop creative approaches in communicating ecology through the Innovation in Ecological Education Grant Scheme.. The Professional Development course in fieldwork aids teachers in developing their fieldwork expertise and the Specialist Course Grant does the same for students by funding the attendance at specialist field courses.
Meetings Grants
The BES finances the running of relevant ecological conferences and meetings, as well as student support to its own and other ecological workshops and meetings. There is also travel support for ecologists from developing countries to attend BES meetings and to build collaborations by being hosted at relevant institutions in the UK before or afterwards. There is also additional support for BES member attendance to selected meetings such as INTECOL and EURECO.
Research Grants
The BES funds small ecological research projects through its Small Ecological Project Grants as well as larger post PhD research work through its Early Career Project Grant Scheme. For those ecologists who wish to carry out research that involves training students in field research techniques there is also the Field Experience grant to help with costs. To enable undergraduates to afford to carry out research work in their holidays we run the Undergraduate Ecological Project Support Grant and to fund talented ecologists from developing countries with their research work we run the Overseas Bursary and Fellowship Schemes.
Policy Grants
The Ecology into Policy Grant provides funding for researchers wishing to produce draft protocols or full systematic reviews and the Public Engagement Grant provides funding to individuals and organisations wishing to organise events that will engage the public with exciting and important aspects of ecology. The Ecological Engagement Award is an annual award to recognise an exceptional contribution to facilitating the use and understanding of ecology.
Honours Awards and Prizes
The BES has a number of Honours, Awards and prizes to reward exceptional contributions in various fields of ecology. The BES also runs a members annual Photographic competition.
BES Reports
The BES requires reports for various BES grants in order for us to monitor the effectiveness of the grants portfolio as well as providing links to grant reports and/or references to published papers in order to assist in the dissemination of research findings.
Giving to the BES
The BES currently runs a Legacy Giving program as a way to increase the scope and impact of the BES grants portfolio and for individuals to directly contribute to the future of the science of ecology through financial donations.
Other Funders
Here the BES has listed some other funding organisations that may be of relevance to ecologists.
Grant Archives
Here the BES keeps the archives of grants that have been discontinued as a record for the BES but also for reference by other organisations that may be thinking of running similar grants.
All of the above grants and further information can be accessed through the menus on the left hand side of this webpage.
