E.J. Milner-Gulland (Executive Editor)
Professor in Conservation Science, Division of Biology, Silwood Park, Imperial College London.
EJ’s research concerns the dynamics of bio-economic systems. This involves population dynamics and human decision-making and the interactions between them, and straddles the fields of theoretical applied ecology, resource economics and conservation science. EJ is particularly interested in how individuals (humans or animals) make decisions under conditions of uncertainty.
Phil Hulme
Professor of Plant Biosecurity, National Centre for Advanced Bio-Protection Technologies, Lincoln University, New Zealand.
Phil is a plant ecologist with particular interests in plant-animal interactions and the consequences of plant invasion. Current research on non-indigenous plants addresses: strategies to predict the pattern and process of invasion by plants; assessment of options to control or eradicate problem species; estimation of ecological impacts on native biodiversity; and development of risk assessment protocols.
Marc Cadotte
Assistant Professor, Departments of Biological Sciences, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Toronto, Canada.
Marc studies the assembly, dynamics and functioning of ecological communities. To understand mechanisms driving coexistence, he uses modelling, experimental and observational methods in aquatic, microbial and plant systems. Marc also employs phylogenetic methods where evolutionary relationships are used as a surrogate representing species differences.
Mark Whittingham
Reader in Applied Ecology, School of Biology, Newcastle University, UK.
Mark works on agro-ecology, foraging ecology and behavioural ecology. His research interests encompass a range of applied ecological problems. Current projects include investigations into the effects of climate change on behaviour and ecology in order to design mitigation strategies, and investigations into the effects of wind farms on birds. Mark uses observations and experiments in the field, controlled laboratory experiments and modelling to understand these problems. Mark also works with scientists from other disciplines to help design multi-functional farming systems.
Jos Barlow
Senior Lecturer in Applied ecology, Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University, UK
Jos’s research examines biodiversity responses to environmental change in tropical ecosystems. It aims to understand how human-dominated tropical forest landscapes can be managed to minimise the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services, while maintaining the livelihoods of rural peoples. He has worked on a wide range of taxa, and has studied ecological issues in many different management systems, including selectively logged native forests, agroforests, fast-growing timber plantations, slash-and-burn, cattle ranching and mechanised agriculture
