Moertl, Bavarian Environment Agency)Journal of Ecology publishes papers on all aspects of the ecology of plants (including algae), in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. In addition to population and community ecology for which the Journal is well known, the Editors encourage submissions on topics such as biogeochemistry, ecosystems ecology, microbial ecology, physiological plant ecology, climate change, molecular genetics, mycorrhizal ecology, and the interactions between plants and organisms such as animals or bacteria.

We only publish papers with strong and original ecological messages that advance our understanding of ecological principles. These studies must transcend the limits of case studies and be of interest to a broad range of ecologists. Both experimental and theoretical papers are accepted, as are descriptive or historical accounts that offer insights into issues of general interest to ecologists. We do not publish papers concerned solely with cultivated plants and agricultural ecosystems.
