Mid-Career and Beyond

Opportunities for ecologists to develop their grant writing skills, access mentoring and support for developing leadership skills

Applying for your first large research grant?

We are pleased to announce our first grant writing retreat for mid-career ecologists. Designed to focus on funding calls over £500,000 and into the millions, this event is aimed at anyone currently or soon to apply to ERC, NERC, BBSRC or other large grant making bodies.

This 3 day retreat was held on Wednesday 1 to Friday 3 March 2017, hosted at the Royal Society, Chicheley Hall.

Our confirmed speakers were:

Successful ERC funded researchers Dr Emma Sayer (Lancaster University) and Dr Zoe Davies (University of Kent)

NERC funded researcher Prof Alistair Boxall (University of York) and NERC review panel Chair Prof Chris Thomas (Aberystwyth University).

With additional speakers and representatives from Research Councils in the UK and Europe, the programme was put together to provide you with all the support you need in getting that first big grant.

Outline Schedule

Wednesday 1 March. Arrive for lunch at 12:30
We considered ‘Am I ready?’ in a workshop including reviewing CV’s, H Index, rankings, networks and individual contexts. In the evening we looked at balancing Innovation and Risk and addressing the criteria of grant making bodies.

Thursday 2 March
Throughout the day delegates were encouraged to share ideas, develop their ideas through facilitated workshops focusing on the application process section by section and take time to apply the learning to their own grant applications.

Friday 3 March. Depart after lunch
During the course of the morning, delegates had time and space to focus in on their own applications, applying the lessons learned during the preceding two days.  Most of our speakers and facilitators were on hand to offer their advice throughout the morning.

The retreat cost £520 for members and £580 for non-members. This includes all catering and accommodation costs for the full stay.

Women in Ecology mentoring

Our popular Women Ecology mentoring scheme invites applications on an annual basis for a 6 – 12 month supported mentoring programme. Find out more and how to apply here.
