Bridging the Gap
Wednesday 8 September
Organiser: Jane Bunting
The 'Bridging the Gap' project is an informal network for anyone interested in the use of long-term data in ecology and conservation practice. The coordinators have a particular interest in using palaeoecological data from sedimentary archives to explore ecological patterns and processes over time scales from a century to a few millennia, but all types of long term data generators and users are very welcome to come along.
I would like to use some of the time to talk about the thorny problems of scale and data formats, which often form barriers to conversation between different ecologists working on the same problem from different perspectives, and sometimes lead to whole areas of research data being dismissed as 'irrelevant' because of (mis?)perceptions about the incompatibility of data and problem. This area seems ripe for some research stimulus, in the context of drives to maximise the interdisciplinary use of all available data given the current financial climate and predictions of future environmental change. A network-type funding application to NERC's Knowledge Exchange scheme is being considered if there is enough interest.
This workshop is intended as an informal opportunity for interested parties to get together and network, for non-members to learn more about the group, and to discuss future plans (including our proposed session at INQUA 2011 and an application for a BES Symposium in 2012/13). I hope to see you there!
