BES Annual Meeting 2010

7 - 9 September

University of Leeds, UK

Mentoring Masterclass
Wednesday 8 September

Organiser: Ceri Margerison, BES Policy and Science Officer

The Annual Meeting this year will provide an opportunity to find out more about the BES's Mentoring Scheme for Women in Ecology.

Established in early 2009, two cohorts of BES members have now taken part. We have matched women established in senior positions in ecology, our mentors, with early-career researchers, mentees. Reasons given by our mentees for taking part are many and varied; from seeking guidance on a career balancing work and family life; guidance on applying for grants; help with networking or writing papers. Feedback from our participants has been positive:

"This scheme came at a perfect time for me as I was unsure what I should do with my career. It was really useful to talk through my options with a successful and established ecologist who also agreed with me. That helped my confidence enormously. It is very useful to have a mentor who is not familiar with you or your work colleagues as it can provide a fresh outlook to your situation."

" [I] Enjoyed interacting with early/younger researchers. I got more job satisfaction from this than from many other activities I have to do!"

Come along to our 'Mentoring Masterclass' on Wednesday 8 September to meet a few of our current mentors and mentees and find out more about the scheme.

Jacki Mason, Mentoring Coordinator for the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology, will provide a brief introduction to mentoring and tips on how to build a successful mentoring relationship.
