What next for the UK National Ecosystem Assessment and IPBES?

Tuesday 13th September 2011, BES Annual Meeting, University of Sheffield

This meeting was organised jointly with the UK Biodiversity Research Advisory Group.

NEA Cover. The front cover of the National Ecosystem Assessment Synthesis of Key Findings, June 2011.The report of the UK National Ecosystem Assessment (NEA) was published on 2nd June 2011. This session, organised as part of the BES Annual Meeting in Sheffield, considered the following questions:

  • What are the next steps for the NEA?
  • How will the results inform future Government policy across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?
  • How can the research community build on the findings of the Assessment?

The session also considered what the formation of the Intergovernmental Science Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) might mean for the future direction of ecological research in the UK, and how the IPBES might inform how the NEA was taken forward.

Four short (15-minute) presentations explored how the results of the NEA were being taken forward, or demonstrated how these results could inform policy and practice in the UK.
