Highlighting Biodiversity Post-2010 - 27 October 2009

(Copyright: Policy)The BES and the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM), held an evening Reception in Parliament to highlight the importance of biodiversity to MPs, policy-makers and NGOs and review the success of the “2010 biodiversity target”.

The event was held in association with Countdown 2010 and the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology Reception Speakers. Pavan Sukhdev, Professor Bob Watson, Lord Selborne and Sarah Robinson, 27 October 2009.

The reception was hosted by Lord Selborne, with speeches from: Sebastian Winkler, Countdown 2010; Pavan Sukhdev, The Economics of Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity (TEEB) study, and Professor Bob Watson, Chief Scientifc Advisor, Defra. 

At the reception, the BES and IEEM lanched a Position Statement, on 'Conserving and Managing Biodiversity Beyond 2010'.

Celebrating Ecology in Scotland: Reception for BES Members and Policy-Makers

The BES held a reception at 'Our Dynamic Earth', Edinburgh to celebrate the work of the BES's members in Scotland. This was the first time the BES Public and Policy Committee had held a meeting in Scotland.

The reception marked the end of a two-day KnowledgeScotland meeting; a partnership event between major Scottish research institutes and the Scottish Government. An article providing an overview of the reception appeared in the December 2009 edition of the BES Bulletin.


Developing the National Ecosystem Assessment

A workshop organised jointly by the BES and the UK Biodiversity Research Advisory Group. There were brief presentations from members of the NEA expert panel, followed by discussion and break-out groups to consider the themes of the NEA in more depth.
