Biological Flora of the British Isles

This series of articles is a separate section of autecological accounts, published in Journal of Ecology alongside the journal’s other articles, but with its own Editor and team of Associate Editors. The Editor of the Biological Flora series, Anthony Davy, is Professor of Ecology at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK

Over three hundred accounts of the Flora of the British Isles have been published in Journal of Ecology to date. Accounts cover both common (e.g. Persicaria amphibia, Festuca arundinacea, Molinia caerulea) and endangered (e.g. Coincya wrightii) species. These accounts do not follow the structure of standard papers in the journal, but have their own format. For an example, please see the article on Silene suecica. Accounts from 1998 onwards can be accessed free of charge via Wiley Online Library.

Please contact Tony with any queries regarding format and also offers of new accounts, which are always welcome.

Readers may also be interested in the information carried in the Ecological Flora of the British Isles database at the University of York. This database, supported by funding from the British Ecological Society and the Natural Environmental Research Council, consists of data on over 1770 species of higher plants that occur in the British Isles, together with a bibliography of sources. The data comprise information on taxonomy (family, genus, specific name, authority, and vernacular name, together with a synonymy), a suite of over 130 ecological and morphological characteristics, vice-county distribution in Britain, European distribution by country, mycorrhizal associations and fungal diseases. The data are obtained from the literature and therefore coverage varies greatly between species: some data sets are still incomplete.

Below is a list of all Biological Flora articles so far published. Accounts published from 1999 onwards are available to download, free of charge, by clicking on the reference number in the list provided (i.e. the underlined entry in the right-hand column). Articles published pre-1999 can be accessed on-line through JSTOR (available at a preferential rate to BES members). Offprints for some accounts are still obtainable from Wiley-Blackwell.
