Virtual Issue: Young Investigator Prizewinners 2012
Each year the BES awards a prize for the best paper, in each of its journals, by an author at the start of their research career.
This virtual issue brings together the winning papers from all 5 journals and those papers that were highly commended.
Congratulations to all concerned!
BES Journals compliant with RCUK open access policy
From 1 April 2013, Research Councils UK is implementing its new open access policies; for full details on this and supporting guidance, please visit the RCUK website.
RCUK-funded authors must select journals that either:
- Offer a fully gold open access route, allowing unrestricted access to the version of record immediately after publication; or
- If gold open access is not available, allow authors to deposit the accepted article (following peer review) in a repository of their choice with a maximum embargo period of six months (12 months for papers in social sciences or humanities). This is known as green open access.
When the gold open access route is chosen by RCUK-funded authors, a CC-BY licence must be agreed, which enables users to copy, distribute and adapt the work, including for commercial purposes, providing attribution is given to the original author. For more information on this licence, visit the Creative Commons website.
All BES journals are compliant with these policy changes via the gold open access route, allowing authors to publish open access when they pay an Article Publication Charge (APC). From 1 April 2013, authors opting to publish open access will be given a choice of Creative Commons licences to assign to their work, including CC-BY for those that have received RCUK funding.
Block grants are being issued to research institutions by RCUK and the UK government to help fund APCs; it is therefore advised that authors funded by RCUK check with their institutions regarding the availability of funding. However, for RCUK-funded authors who are unable to access funding from their institution to pay APCs, in accordance with the Publishers Association decision tree endorsed by RCUK, the BES will allow these authors to post the accepted version of their article in a repository of their choice 12 months after publication.

BES partners with Wiley Open Access journal Ecology and Evolution
The BES is delighted to announce a new partnership with the Wiley Open Access journal Ecology and Evolution. The support of the five BES journal titles, all of which rank in the top 20% of ecology journals (ISI), will ensure it continues to attract the latest prestigious research from across the discipline.
