Get involved – Join one of the BES Committees

Would you like to get involved in the running of the British Ecological Society? You can help make sure we publish the best ecological science, serve our members well and run the best conferences.

Help make your society better

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed BES members to join three of our committees. These set the direction and oversee the work of the Society through our journals, our meetings and in member engagement.

With 6,000 members in 120 countries, we are the largest ecological society in Europe and our mission is to work towards a world inspired, informed and influenced by ecology. It is a fantastic time to get involved and start shaping the future of your Society. 2019 is an important year as our current Strategic Plan ends and we look to create a new set of goals for the BES over the next four years.

We value the diversity and wide range of perspectives that people from different backgrounds bring to their work and to ecology, and are committed to equality of opportunity. We would therefore particularly welcome applications from currently under-represented groups in the Society.

What it involves

The Publications, Membership and Meetings Committees are looking for new members to start during 2019 for a three-year term.

Each of these committees has a different remit and is seeking members with particular skills and experiences (see below). However, members of all three committees are chosen for their representation of the overall BES community, experience as an author, reviewer, member or meeting delegate and their desire to contribute to and strengthen the Society overall.

Committee members are expected to attend up to three meetings per year at Charles Darwin House in London. Remote attendance is possible, but attendance in person is encouraged for at least one meeting per year. In addition, committee members support the work of the Society throughout the year, when necessary, mainly via email. Travel expenses are reimbursed for all meetings.

How to apply

Please send a short CV (no more than two pages), and a one-page statement outlining your interest in a particular role to hello@britishecologicalsociety.org by 8 February 2019.

Applications will be reviewed by the relevant Committee and all applicants will be notified of their decision. If you would like more information or an informal discussion with a Committee member before making an application, please contact Catherine Hill, Director of Publishing catherine@britishecologicalsociety.org with any questions you may have.

Meetings Committee

Meetings Committee is a dynamic and important committee, which oversees the Society’s Annual Meeting, regular Symposia, and the activities undertaken by our Special Interest Groups (SIGs). Its work is integral to BES, providing a diverse array of opportunities for our members and the scientific community more broadly to come together, both in person and virtually. Additionally, the Committee is cross-cutting, often collaborating closely with the BES policy, publication and membership teams on various joint initiatives. Please explore the website to discover the breadth of events Meetings Committee supports.

What Meetings Committee are looking for

If you enjoy our meetings and want to help us continue to deliver great events in future, then we’d like to hear from you! We are keen to receive applications from everyone, but would very much welcome submissions from early career researchers (PhD and PDRA level) and individuals working outside of academia.

Membership Committee

We are a UK-based society with a growing global membership, so it is an exciting time to get involved with our Membership Committee. The Committee maintains the development and implementation of our membership benefits and services. We also manage the retention of current members and acquisition of new members. We explore ways of improving our membership experience and expanding the reach of the society. We also work closely with the editor of the membership magazine and other teams within the society to ensure we are engaging with our members in the best possible ways.

What Membership Committee are looking for

If you would like to help the BES expand our community, then apply to be part of our Committee! We are looking for new members from all career stages, particularly early career. We are also interested in having someone on our Committee from continental Europe as a large proportion of our membership is based there.

Publications Committee

Publications Committee oversees the management of the Society’s portfolio of academic research journals and the Ecological Reviews book series, ensuring that we continue to publish outstanding ecological science and disseminate it to a broad scientific audience.

The Committee:

  • monitors journal key performance indicators;
  • manages the contracts with the Society’s publishers;
  • carries out regular horizon scanning for new opportunities;
  • stays abreast of important developments within academic publishing;
  • is responsible for developing and implementing the Publications Strategic Plan; and
  • reviews progress against strategic objectives.
