Join our Personnel Committee

We are looking for BES members to join our Personnel Committee in 2018 for a three-year term.

This is an exciting opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience in charity governance and oversight of management and staff. In this role you would help to assure that the BES nurtures its people in ways that best support the delivery of its vision for a world inspired, informed and influenced by ecology. This opportunity represents a valuable experience assisting career development for those in or thinking about leadership roles or trusteeship.

What we are looking for

To achieve an appropriate balance of skills and experience on the Committee, we are especially looking for applicants who have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Human resource functions
  • Management of people and performance
  • Staff appraisals, learning and development
  • Equality and Diversity
  • Health and Safety
  • Change management

Organisational leadership and strategy

We value the diversity and wide range of perspectives that people from different backgrounds bring to their work and to ecology, and are committed to equality of opportunity. We therefore particularly welcome applications from currently under-represented groups in the Society.

  • Delivers recommendations to our Board of Trustees on the composition and structure of staff teams including change management
  • Manages the Society’s relationship with its staff team and HR contractor
  • Supervises the implementation of Health and Safety policies in the BES (note: Board of Trustees has responsibility for statutory compliance with regulations and legislation)
  • Is responsible for the performance appraisal of the Board of Trustees

Committee members

Members of the Committee are expected to attend two meetings a year (March and November) at Charles Darwin House in London. Remote attendance is possible, but attendance in person is expected for at least one meeting per year. In addition, Committee members support the work of the Executive Director throughout the year when necessary, mainly via email. Travel expenses are reimbursed for all meetings. The Committee is chaired by the Honorary Secretary of the British Ecological Society, Adam Vanbergen. Ordinary members are chosen for the Committee according to their relevant experience and as representation of the BES community.

Application

To apply, please send a short CV (no more than two pages), and a 1 page statement outlining your interest in the role to Hazel Norman, Executive Director, by 5 March 2018.
Applications will be reviewed by the Personnel Committee. If you would like more information or an informal discussion with a Committee member before making an application, please contact Hazel or Adam (ajv@ceh.ac.uk) with any questions you may have.
