Get involved – Join Publications Committee

We are looking for BES members to join our Publications Committee in 2018 for a three-year term.

About the Committee

Publications Committee oversees the management of the Society’s portfolio of academic research journals and the Ecological Reviews book series, ensuring that we continue to publish outstanding ecological science and disseminate it to a broad scientific audience.

The Committee

  • monitors journal key performance indicators;
  • manages the contracts with the Society’s publishers;
  • carries out regular horizon scanning for new opportunities;
  • stays abreast of important developments within academic publishing;
  • is responsible for developing and implementing the Publications Strategic Plan; and
  • reviews progress against strategic objectives.

Committee members

Members of the Committee are expected to attend two meetings a year (April and October) at Charles Darwin House in London. Remote attendance is possible, but attendance in person is expected for at least one meeting per year. In addition, committee members support the work of the publications team throughout the year, when necessary, mainly via email. Travel expenses are reimbursed for all meetings.

Ordinary members are chosen for their representation of the BES community, experience of publishing as author, reviewer or editor and their desire to strengthen and shape the Society’s publications.

What we are looking for

To achieve an appropriate balance of skills and experience on the Committee, we are especially looking for applications from practitioner members or members working closely with the practitioner community; members with an interest in open science topics; and members with understanding of subject areas outside of ecology, but relevant for our journals, such as evolutionary biology.

We value the diversity and wide range of perspectives that people from different backgrounds bring to their work and to ecology, and are committed to equality of opportunity. We therefore particularly welcome applications from currently under-represented groups in the Society.

To apply, please send a short CV (no more than two pages), and a 1-page statement outlining your interest in the role to Andrea Baier, Head of Publishing, by 5 March 2018 (

Applications will be reviewed by Publications Committee. If you would like more information or an informal discussion with a Committee member before making an application, please contact Andrea with any questions you may have.
