Abstract

Reports the effects of seasonal grazing by sheep on young Juniperus communis for seven years from 1966 on IBP grazing plots at Aston Rowant national nature reserve, Oxfordshire. Grazing in autumn and winter increased mortality and stunted the plants; summer grazing was apparently beneficial. Mortality on ungrazed plots was similar to that on plots grazed in autumn and winter, but the causes were different. Losses on ungrazed plots ceased after five years. The implications for conservation of J. communis are discussed.
