Abstract

On shortgrass prairie in N.E. Colorado with dominant Bouteloua gracilis, Buchloe dactyloides, Agropyron smithii and Artemisia frigida, antelope and cattle consumed a similar range of foods in winter, with 5 species comprising 94% of antelope and 96% of cattle diets. In summer, B. gracilis accounted for >50% of the diet of cattle whereas antelope diets were mixed, with 18% Sphaeralcea coccinea the most abundant item.
