Abstract

A steady-state model linking the influxes and effluxes of CO2 to and from the substomatal cavity through the mean intercellular-space CO2 concentration accounted for 90% of the variance in field measurements of photosynthesis. The rate of net photosynthesis is expressed as a function of radiation flux, leaf temperature, ambient CO2 concentration and stomatal resistance, dark respiration as a function of leaf temperature and radiation flux. For unbiased estimates, these parameters should be measured simultaneously under a controlled field environment.
