Abstract

Seed of H. leporinum was collected from a field at Mount Derrimut, Victoria in Jan. 1975 and stored until May when germination was studied. Av. seed fresh wt./head was in the range 0.005-0.012 g; seeds from spikelets at the centre of the head were heavier than those near the edge. Av. seed number/head was 25.4 and was inversely related to seed wt./head. The av. number of spikelets/head was 27.5 with 92.22% fertility of the heads. In germination trials 76.7% of the seed germinated after 3 days imbibition and 93.26% after 32 days. Max. germination frequency occurred at 4 days. Lighter seed had lower germinability than heavier seed.
