Abstract

In a study at Craigellachie Forest, Scotland, during 1978-79, covering 5 soil types and 5 provenances planted in the early 1960s, pupal numbers of Panolis flammea were highest in areas of deep unflushed peat and in provenances from N. and central British Columbia, and lowest in areas of peaty gleys and mineral soils and in provenances from S. coastal areas. Soil suitability for Pinus contorta was negatively correlated with pupae/m2. Planting less susceptible trees would reduce the danger of outbreaks in poor soil areas.
