Abstract

In afforestation since 1920 (mainly 1946-60, 69% Picea sitchensis) at Kielder, upland blanket mires too wet to afforest were left unplanted. The vegetation of these mires was classified by numerical methods into ombrogenous mire and non-mire moorland types. Vascular plant and bryophyte species cover of ombrogenous mire, wet heath and 'dry' moorland species at a site were related to the site's edge/area ratio and the length of time that it had been surrounded by forest.
