EUROeyeopener 2.1: Drinking water supply southwestern Delta and Rijnmond-Drechtsteden.

Abstract

Safeguarding the future drinking water supply in this Dutch region affects the chloride level of polder water, and thus the quality of irrigation water. The decision support tool EUROeyeopener 2.1 was used to calculate irrigation and drinking water demands, salt levels in water, crop yields, and irrigation management costs. Cost benefit analysis was done for 5 promising management measures. These include location of a pipeline for sweet water to Walcheren (to increase fruit production), 2 water conservation measures, more efficient irrigation, and reducing salt levels in intake water.
