Abstract

The British Ecological Society (BES) is the world's oldest ecological society, founded in 1913, with over 5,000 members. As an independent, authoritative learned society and a leading voice for ecologists in the UK, the Society is committed to an evidence-informed approach, and to ensuring that policymakers have easy access to the best available scientific evidence to inform decision-making. The three priorities of BES for policy-making are enumerated. The meaning of ecology and its value for society, economy and the environment are described. Case studies are presented, focusing on valuing natural capital, protecting insect pollinators and resilience to climate change.
