A Survey of the Black Hairstreak Butterfly in North Buckinghamshire: The results of surveys of the distribution of Black Hairstreak, Satyrium pruni in a complex of woodlands in the Bernwood Area.
Abstract
This report presents the findings from surveys conducted to support a proposal for designating a new Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in the Bernwood area of north Buckinghamshire, UK, focusing on the Black Hairstreak butterfly (Satyrium pruni). In over 2 summers (2018 and 2021), surveys were carried out in existing SSSI woodlands, adjacent areas and connecting habitats to map the distribution of Black Hairstreak and identify supporting habitats. Results revealed that Black Hairstreak was widely distributed across the survey area, with evidence of several discrete breeding colonies, particularly in Grendon and Doddershall Woods and Ham Home-cum-Hamgreen Woods. The surveys also identified key supporting habitats and highlighted the Bernwood complex as a significant national stronghold for the species. These results aimed to guide habitat protection, linkage creation and management strategies to enhance Black Hairstreak conservation in the region.
