Microbial Ecology SIG Annual Meeting
Join the Microbial Ecology SIG for their annual meeting, where the programme includes a two day symposium, an early career event, and an amplicon sequencing workshop.
The British Ecological Society’s Microbial Ecology Special Interest Group will be holding a “pick and mix” event at the University of Leeds including:
Monday 2 September
Early Career Event
This day will include talks on career pathways and sources of funding for postdocs, grant writing tips, a CV workshop, and a publication workshop. It is primairly aimed at Masters and PhD students, but any one is welcome! Places limited to 20 so book early to avoid disappointment!
Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 September
“Microbial Ecology: From Lab to Field and Back Again” Symposium
The complex interactions between microbiomes and host traits are best understood through both field (i.e. real world) and experimental (i.e. tightly controlled) set ups. This meeting will explore how field studies and experimental lab models enable us to gain an understanding of the environment-microbiome-host axis across plants, animals and humans. We welcome contributions from attendees about their research, including posters, flash talks (5 minutes) and full talks (15 minutes). We are also excited to welcome the following keynote speakers:
- Dr Sarah Knowles, University of Oxford
- Dr Damien Rivett, Manchester Metropolitan University
- Dr Thuy Do, University of Leeds
Thursday 5 and Friday 6 September
Bioinformatics Workshop: Using DADA2 and phyloseq in R for amplicon sequence data
This two day workshop will guide you through the R-based pipelines for analysing 16S and/or ITS rRNA amplicon sequence data. This will include the use of DADA2 for filtering and trimming your raw seqeunce data into amplicon sequence variants, and analysing those data using packages such as phyloseq and vegan. Places limited to 20 so book early to avoid disappointment!
