The Biodiversity Exploratories is a long-term research program in Germany funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). It involves over 40 projects and around 300 researchers exploring the relationships between land use, biodiversity, and ecosystem services in grassland and forest ecosystems. Launched in 2006, the program encompasses three study regions: Schwäbische Alb, Hainich-Dün, and Schorfheide-Chorin, each with 100 experimental plots (50 in forests and 50 in grasslands) that reflect various land-use intensities. The program investigates the effects of land use on biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and the societal drivers of land-use change, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and open data access.
