What is the the Welsh Policy Group?

The Welsh Policy Group (WPG) was launched in 2015, with the aim of promoting the use of ecological knowledge in Wales and supporting the involvement of ecologists in all levels of Welsh policymaking. The WPG brings together BES members and people working in Welsh environmental policy to highlight and promote how knowledge can aid policymakers’ with decision-making. We also support the involvement of ecologists in all levels of Welsh policymaking.

What do we do?

As a BES group, the WPG presents the scientific evidence rather than campaigning on particular issues. This includes operating within a wider proactive model for BES policy work, meaning that the WPG not only reacts to policy opportunities (such as consultations) but also focuses on identifying key policy opportunities to increase the BES policy impact.

We have a new committee!

In the past, the WPG has organised events (such as ‘Pie and a Pint’ events and policy training workshops) focused on policy priorities and processes in Wales, prepared briefings to members about the latest Welsh policy news and responded to particularly important consultations and inquiries. All previous consultation and inquiry responses can be found here.

The WPG is being renewed, and as part of this we are drafting a new Vision and Strategic Aims, and planning what topics and activities we would like to focus on in the future. The WPG will start organising events and activities in early 2022.

If you have any questions about the group, or would like to suggest a collaboration with the WPG on a particular event or project, then please get in touch with Nick Harvey, Policy Officer: nick@britishecologicalsociety.org
