Abstract

A Calluna vulgaris canopy was reconstructed using 6-cm cuttings supported on a clear Perspex base drilled with randomly arranged holes of appropriate size, and the amount of light intercepted was studied by photographing the shadows cast at different angles of incident light. The canopy was found to act almost as a neutral filter, with little difference in light transmission at different wavelengths.
