In competition experiments the suppression of Early Hybrid by F1 Selma was not eliminated by increasing nutrient supply levels up to several times the basic dose but with deficient nutrient supply both partners attained similar size. Suppression was not accompanied by reduced N and P concentration in the shoots. A possible allelopathic effect by F1 Selma was deduced from the fact that suppression of Early Hybrid was not accompanied in most cases by the expected increase in yield of its adversary.
