Fitting a linear relationship between specific respiration and growth rates using time-course data.
Abstract
A previous method of fitting a linear relationship between specific respiration and growth rates, due to Thornley & Hesketh [seeFCA 25, 5999] and based on equating coefficients in polynomials, is extended. 2 alternative methods are described; both use linear functional relationship techniques. The 3 methods were compared by Monte Carlo simulation. The linear functional relationship methods were found to be substantially more accurate than the original method, although computationally more complicated. These methods also provided a choice of growth curve, a feature not available in Thornley & Hesketh's method. Published data relating to cotton bolls are used to illustrate the different methods.
