Abstract

This paper focuses on the negative effects of land degradation on the sustainability, biodiversity and global ecosystem functioning and in reducing the resiliency of ecological and economic systems. The benefits of ensuring the proper functioning of various soil processes (decomposition and nutrient cycling, among others) and sowing of a high diversity of plant assemblages in the reclamation of contaminated lands are also discussed.
