Copper polluton in Rwenzori National Park, Uganda.
Abstract
Cu and associated wastes washed down from spillage and leakage at the Kilembe mines have produced two areas bare of vegetation in the Park. Cu concentrations in the soil were too high for growth and degradation resulted. The derelict areas were virtually devoid of animal life and grasses failed to germinate. There is a danger that pollution may have spread to other parts of the Park by food-chain transfer and flow into a lake.
