A review of the National Vegetation Classification for the Calthion group of plant communities in England and Wales.
Abstract
The DEFRA-commissioned BD1310 project and subsequent research by the Floodplain Meadows Partnership have provided a comprehensive analysis of damp mesotrophic grasslands in floodplain meadows across England and Wales (UK). By examining a large dataset, 12 distinct nodal communities were identified, some of which revise existing classifications while others propose entirely new community types. These communities were characterized by their plant species composition, soil fertility, moisture and pH levels. This report highlights the challenges in defining communities within the Calthion alliance and discusses their conservation significance. The findings have been incorporated into software tools for easier access and utilization. Additionally, an updated dichotomous key to mesotrophic grasslands is provided as an appendix to facilitate identification and classification.
